2611 with NM-16ESW

Network modules for the 2600, 3600, and 3700 series routers sometimes require a certain Cisco IOS Software feature set in order to be recognized.

ATM, voice, and switch modules require a Plus feature set, and Virtual Private Network (VPN) modules require an IP Security (IPSec) feature set in order to be recognized.

To determine the software requirements and to upgrade to a compatible Cisco IOS train, refer to:

If the network module is still not recognized, verify that the installed Cisco IOS Software has the required feature set to support the module.

Issue the:

show version command

This is a sample command output:

Configuration register is 0x2102Look at the second line of the show version command output.

The feature set is designated by the characters between the dashes in the (C3725-IS-M) part of that line.

In this case, IS represents the feature set, which stands for IP Plus.

If there is an S present, it indicates a Plus feature set.

If the display shows (C3725-I-M), it indicates the Cisco IOS Software was a non-Plus version, and ATM, voice, and switch modules would not be recognized.

Always use this part of the show version command output to determine the feature set rather than the filename from the System image file is "flash:c3725-is-mz.122-11.T6.bin" line because it is possible that the file may have been renamed.

If a VPN module is not recognized, verify that the feature set is an IPSec version.

The characters which indicate this are 56 or K.

For example, (C3725-IK9S-M) or (C3640-IS56I-M) are IPSec versions.

If the feature set does not support the network module, upgrade the Cisco IOS Software to one with a compatible feature set.

It is all very confusing regarding the 2600 software.

Can you please post the output of the show ver command. i.e. is it an XM or not?

any Feature set will do, well IP-Base is OK so I guess any one will do.

I would recommend 12.4 (not T) if it meets your other requirements.

BUT there is no 12.4 for 2611 (not XM) There is no 12.3T for 2611.

Here what worked for me:

I don't want to be difficult or anything. I just want to point out that the above elements of the sho ver do not show the hardware platform or the version. You have cut out the bits that matter most!!! :-))

Yes he did. It's using the new packaging for IOS, not the old crusty IP PLUS type packaging. It's Advanced Security. Take a look here to familiarize yourself with the new IOS packaging names:

The thing that I don't understand then is that in the version information posted the lines began with the text "ROM:"

In no case that I have ever seen is this directly related to the IOS version running.

Here is an 857W with a software version that you may prefer: Router2#sh ver Cisco IOS Software, C850 Software (C850-ADVSECURITYK9-M), Version 12.4(6)T, RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc1)

The first line shows the IOS version, the line beginning "ROM:" shows something else.

As far as I can see the information provided by the original poster was /not/ the IOS software version running on the box.

Please post a complete show ver output that shows the IOS version where the lines begin "ROM:"

The originall posted sh ver is clearly not complete, unfortunately as far as I can see the OP did indeed miss out the most critical information. The ROM version is something that you almost never have to be concerned about (unless you have of course some 8500s:-(()

If you disagree please convince me, since I want to try to understand as much as I can.
