5.8GHz antennas for 802.11a are produced commercially.
Is this for a PC/laptop, or the access point, or both? Does an existing link work at all at this length? Is it clear line of site between two windows, outdoors, brick buildings, trees?
The D-Link AirPremier AG DWL-AG530 PCI card comes with an external antenna.
There is no reason that you couldn't build your own, except that tolerances are tight, but for this distance, that doesn't matter. A cantenna should be about 50mm in diameter, 150-200mm long.
If you have an existing access point, you might just put a reflector on it, like
