How to replace battery

The odd thing is that many times I get calls from people in just that situation. Since we don't advertise in the YP, they are clearly searching online. Perhaps that's because the installing dealer has refused to respond now that they're not paying for monitoring. Perhaps it's because they don't want to pay a sevice visit fee. I really don't know. What I do know is that these calls are fairly common.

Once I know that it's just a "Low Batt" trouble, I explain how to stop the beeping and let them place an order for a new battery. You'd be surprised how many of those customers come back later looking for additional sensors to upgrade their alarms.

I don't get many calls from 87-year-olds. However, this week I have been walking a 67-year-old lady through the process of upgrading her 1008e system with scores of sensors strung together to a new Napco P9600 system with each detector on a separate circuit. She had a little trouble understanding the manual so I'm explaining step-by-step how to do it.

We've had lots of conversations. In exchange for some of my "extra" support time she's shared a great recipe for cranberry and chili sauce meatballs. Hint: the secret is in the lime juice.

The batteries used to last longer, but cost a lot more than they do now too.

I'll install a local if I have time and the money is right. I'll also service ANY alarm system as long as it's not monitored by someone else. And I won't "pre-wire only" anything - full system local or monitored doesn't matter...but no pre-wires.

Eventually, a fair percentage of the locals become monitored, so I end up making more money. A LOT of times it's just a client "test" to see how you're gonna perform..seriously! When they find that I've done a good job and treated them right they usually end up asking; how much did you say monitoring was again?...big smile on my face :-)

Yuasa/Genesis mostly..especially when they're on sale. Sometimes I use Ultratech or whatever they are.

Back when I was doing a lot of volume I used Interstate mainly because they floored me and that was conveinient (-sp).

Yuasa is now Genesis I think.

If I run into a client on fixed income and can't afford the service call I will drop one buy an not charge if they're close by, but mostly I will UPS them a battery and panel key.

Our practices were similar for many years. Eventually, I declined to bid on local alarms unless the job was major. I've always been willing to service any system. If someone else was monitoring it I wouldn't bother though since the other company would raise such a stink. If someone else was doing a poor job and the client asked me, I'd take it over in a heartbeat though.

Same here. Prewires only are a waste of time. Builders rarely want to pay a fair price for the labor and we could make more money using the same man-hours to work on full systems.

Most of the DIYers I speak to want local, non-monitored systems. A lot of them have had bad experiences with some alarm alarm company in the past. These are people who are not likely to spring for monitoring any time soon.

If more alarm companies had the same attitude there would be a lot less DIY. Fortunately for me, you're better than most. :^)

Yeah, but the OP is talking about ADT here...

I use my trusty "Canadian Tire" battery tester. It's also a VOM, but I don't use it for that (I have a Fluke). The tester was actually designed for automotive batteries and measures recovery time after a load has been placed on the battery. It's a nice feature. I find the SOTA batteries are giving us about 5 years on any of the DSC "Power" series panels. On some of the Paradox stuff I could probably get more, but I don't "push it". Kantech eats batteries. 3 years max.

I have only charged $25 for a battery swap if that is all I have to do. Similar policy. Local only clients uually aren't an issue because they usually don't even want to pay that much for the battery. I direct them to Home Depot or Radio Shack to change it themselves. Last time I saw one at Radio Shack it was $22.95. A few change the battery themselves.

In the Kt-200 its pretty normal to loose them faster cause they use 2 battery in series to make the 24 volt backup..but in the kt-300 its not the same thing cause there is only one battery

How do you like the new Kt-ncc? did you used it yet?

I've installed a few lately sure beat the Gateway software for ease of use and the fact that now the IT guys are not trying anymore to take control of the device that control there electronic security..all they see is a black box,not a pc

Makes no difference whether it's the 200 or the 300. They both "eat" batteries (even the better quality ones like SOTA).

We've got three jobs "in the mill" (that we've bid on) using Kantech's newest "widget" but I still have some reservations considering all the problems we've experienced with "new widgets" from DSC and Ademco in the past.

Have you been dealing with Kantech since long? Been dealing with them when they were still called Omnitron...only a few employee of the company knows that it was called like that...

and usually they make a very good testing of there stuff before releasing to the mass,I was a beta tester for them on the Entrapass Global product version 1(was called KL9000 in those days and after entrapass NT) and they were even releasing beta stuff that were not too bad..
