1900 switch without command line !

Picked up an older 1900 switch , surprised to see it lacked command line IOS; found only menu based setup; how do I tell if a 1900 on Ebay will have IOS ?

Brad:

I've looked at their docs - till my eyes watered - they don't seem to write to questions in this way - I still have no idea if my switch can support IOS , or at what point the switches do - the 3000 series ? higher ? If you have any general idea as to this please write back.

1900 switches come in two versions, the serial number will be -A or -E. The -E ones are the only ones with a command line interface. If you look on ebay, they sell for more then the -A ones.

The "A" and "E" in the serial number is new to me.

The highest I saw the IOS for the 1900 series was 9.0 and it came as either standard or enterprise edition. Standard is menu based and has limited VLAN capability. Enterprise allows the full set of capabilities but has different commands than what you are used to on the 2900 and above IOS switches.

If you buy a 1900, use it as a piece of your lab, but I recommend a 2900 such as a 2924XL but one that can do at least one or two trunk ports. You won't get very far with a 1900 anymore and they aren't used in the market. Buy a researched 2900 for $100 or less. A 3500 would be sweet with a 3550 (multilayer) being the hottest for a small lab. I went a different route and did a 5500 for $250.
