That is a "less than" sign - but then again you are British... maybe that's the metric "greater than" sing?
Seriously, your news reader should have some sort of setting that will cause the quoted text to stand out in some way.
There is at least one other here who does the same thing and it makes reading his responses (especially to long posts) frustrating.
I don't know if it's a universal thing, but you might try "selecting" (ie. highlighting) the entire text that you want to reply to ...... then hit the reply tab or whatever your newsreader wants you to do in order to write a reply.
If it holds true, the text you selected should come up in the reply window with the "greater than" symbols already in front of each line of the text you are replying to.
