I have just installed Outpost Firewall Free. Is the icon in the tray supposed to be a question mark?

Yes...it means you have it set in rules wizard mode.It will change if you set mode to block all or allow all. me

By the way..you may want to disable auto update , otherwise it will update to version 3 trial. me
Where do I set the auto update? I have been looking around and can't find it. I must be blind.........

Click "help" tab and untick auto check for update...
Depends on you and your setup /surfin habits really...i use rules wizard mode.More info on setup etc here...
