10 seconds

Just installed a Netgear router with its own firewall (on XP) and, oddly, when I check e-mail I get 10 second delay before the mail goes. Then after that they go straight away. But close the e-mail client and open it again, and, sure enough, the 10 second delay is back. Any ideas on this? Is it the firewall/router blocking something? Would appreciate any suggestions. Thanks.

Could be that the mail server is trying to contact your machine with IDENT. Try forwarding port 113/TCP to your machine or rejecting it instead of silently dropping it - if that solves your problem, you've found the downside of "Stealthing".

Or an idiot e-mail provider that still uses IDENT which is a fallible and corruptible protocol.

Nope, don't have the time to guess WHICH e-mail program that you happen to use but never mentioned.
