Image won't fit

Hi,

I have a 3640 with 32M memory. I was trying to load :

c3640-jk9s-mz.124-16.bin

which SUPPOSEDLY fits into 32M. The image is 34113584 but my total free is 33030140. I did a delete/squeeze a few times, but I can't get more than 33030140. Is there something else that might be taking the extra 1083444 that I don't know about?

Thanks, Tuc

Tuc,

Buy 64M PC Card or select another image. For example, if you will select an image without SSH, most likely it will be smaller. Usually when you select image, Cisco website specifies a memory requirements for RAM and Flash.

Good luck,

Download Software for 3640 ENTERPRISE PLUS IPSEC 3DES : c3640-jk9s-mz.

124-16.bin Release Version - 12.4.16, File Size - 34113584, DRAM - 128, Flash - 32, MD5 Checksum - 0e69e0e387b035257a967517ec44e0b2, Publish Date - 21-JUN-2007

Hmmm. 32M Flash must be a typo.

I have not counted exactly but I have often noticed that the numbers did not add up and have assumed that the 'missing' memory was being used up by the filesystem.

Anyway 32 *1024 * 1024 is only 33,554,432 so even if there was NO filesystem overhead this image would never fit in 32M flash.

If you have a service contract you could allways open a TAC case. 3640 is clearly pretty old and maybe no one checked.

There is always tftpboot if it's for a lab.

Ok, so I'm not going crazy! Thank you. I just needed to hear that it WAS impossible for it to fit in 32M

No, no service contract. Its in "production" so can't tftpboot it. I might be in a little bit of a "bloat" case. I'll have to check if I can kick down on my needs for it , or as the other post said buy a flash card for it. (Got any sources for good/cheap ones? ;) )

Thanks, Tuc

Hi,

According to everything I read, the 3640 can use Product Numbers: MEM3600-4FC=, MEM3600-8FC=, MEM3600-16FC=, MEM3600-20FC= which means the max would be 20M, far less than what I need for that image. There are

2 slots, so technically I can get 40 total, but I didn't think you could span the 2 cards for 1 filesystem.

Thanks, Tuc

I have experienced it once. Have two 3725, purchased within 2-3 months interval. Both show "32M Flash" in "show version". However when you do "dir", one shows, for example, 34000000, and another 33500000. So, the same image fits one, and does not fit another.

Did you try formatting the flash?

Multiple times. Even tried /no-squeeze-reserve-space .

C3640-1#erase /no-squeeze-reserve-space flash: Erasing the flash filesystem will remove all files! Continue? [confirm] Erasing device... eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee ...erased Erase of flash: complete C3640-1#dir /all Directory of flash:/

himinbjorg# ls -l c3640-jk9s-mz.124-16.bin

-rw-r--r-- 1 root wheel 34113584 Jul 13 08:28 c3640-jk9s-mz.

124-16.bin

I'm still 559156 short....

I re-checked the Cisco site :

Release 12.4.16 Size 34113584 BSD Checksum - Router Checksum 0x8924 MD5 0e69e0e387b035257a967517ec44e0b2 Date Published: 21-JUN-2007

himinbjorg# md5 c3640-jk9s-mz.124-16.bin MD5 (c3640-jk9s-mz.124-16.bin) = 0e69e0e387b035257a967517ec44e0b2

So mine is the right size, and right checksum, but I just can't seem to get enough space to put it there....

Thanks, Tuc
