Not necessarily (better routers make it easy), and even so, typically just copy and paste.

It does have a bearing on how easy it is to do.

I've never seen a router without flash memory to retain config settings. I'd replace any that didn't have it.

My experience is that doing the config in the router is less error prone.

I have a perfectly good newsreader. It doesn't - and cannot possibly - tell me which is the "6th" post, because it depends whether you're sorting by thread or time. And in my case, I doubt I have the 6th post - by either order - on my newsserver (I control the server, and I like it to expire messages quickly).

Our google poster is just assuming that everybody has their messages displayed like his, and google has enough server space to be able to keep posts forever.
