Hello, Is there a possibility to remove GBIC without turning off 3550 switch ? Is GBIC a hotplug device ?
Thanks, Allybee

No. If i remember correct, GBIC is not hot pluggable.
snipped-for-privacy@ge.com tried to tell us something, and all I got was:
Yes. GBICs are hotplug devices.
Do I need to type any command to stop/disable/prepare for remove, or just brutally remove it ?

You should just be able to unplug it. Obviously the interface will change state to 'down'.

Well, if it is the hasp variety, brutally removing it could leave you with a stuck GBIC.
If the current spanning tree is running through the port with the GBIC and if there is an alternate route being supressed, you might perhaps want the certainty gained by deliberately disabling the interface and ensuring that the new tree comes up.
On the other hand, if you can swap the GBICs in a few seconds, you might want to just go ahead -- saves rebuilding the spanning tree twice ;-)
It is not necessary to do anything other than pull out the GBIC when you are ready.
Hi Allybee,

I prefer wherever practicable to shut down interfaces prior to removal.
I feel that the "shutdown" code is likely to be simpler and more tested (field and otherwise) than the oops; it has gone code.
I have seen full resets on various hot swaps (in the Lab - 'cos that's where I have done most hot swaps.)
