Cisco 836 and VPN

Hello,

I am using a Cisco 836 ADSL router and would like it to be a VPN Server allowing people to connect with a VPN client. I read about that Cisco Easy VPN Remote software which should be part of the IOS on the Cisco

836 but I cannot find the client software which I can install on Windows to connect to the VPN Server. First is this scenario possible ? Then where do I find the software if there is any ?

Many thanks Regards

Yes.

Depends on what you configure.

Standard IPsec is available with Windows 2000 or Windows XP or many other O/Ses.

With the Cisco VPN Client you can push allmost all configuration from the VPN concentrator to the client.

Without a PLUS IOS the encryption is only performed through software in the router's CPU. Throughput will be limited to less than 120kB/s using AES or less than 80kB/s using 3DES.

You can also configure PPTP as a convienient alternativ if security is not a real concern. All you need comes with Windows.

First, many thanks for your quick answer!

And is this Cisco VPN client free to download ?

I think I will go for the PPTP variant, unfortunately I didn't find any references of PPTP in the Cisco 836 documentation PDF:

Cisco 826, 827, 828, 831, 836, and 837 and Cisco SOHO 76, 77, 78, 91, 96, and 97 Routers Software Configuration Guide

which I downloaded :( Do you maybe have any pointers how I can configure a PPTP server on my Cisco 836 router ? Or maybe even a config example ?

Thanks in advance Regards

Hi Igor, many thanks for your answer and the documentation it helped pretty much! The only thing I am not sure about is how to configure now PPTP login user accounts. I used the following account to create a user:

username vpnuser password 0 testpw

Unfortunately, authentication doesn't work as you can see here in the debug output:
