Hi Guys,



I have to setup port spanning on works 6500. No one else has any Cisco knowledge and as Im half way through CCNA3 I was asked if I could help.



The switch is 300 miles away so I cant physically see whats going on. I gained access to it today through remote desktop on a laptop and then through the console port of the switch.



I was expecting to see IOS on there, but there is some real old OS running dont know if its catOS, sh ver didnt say it was. Half of IOS the commands I know dont work.



I managed to view the config with sh config but sh run or sh startup dont work.



Is there the equivalent of a running config and a startup config on this old OS, just in case I need to do a copy startup-config running- config if I stuff the spanning up.

It will be CatOS.

IIRC there is no Running/Startup. Just the config, changes have immediate effect and get saved right away.

sh config ?? - ah yes you mentioned that.

set ...... clear.... IIRC.

show config all show port show trunk show vlan show tech

All good ideas for backing up the config and ensuring success. Show config should technically give you everything you need, but show config all will show all configurations (default as well which accounts for the majority of the excess length), but the other commands are good to just for reference.

Thanks for the help, What does IIRC stand for ?

MMm its starting to sound a little scary. I have got the Cisco documentation and can see how to perform the spanning but I dont know enough about the OS.

As its in use I cant really experiment, I dont even know if the 'no' command works :)

I did try the sh vlan and there is only one, VLAN1.

I did copy the output of sh config to notepad as a backup.

sh config said that there were quite a few ports (More than im used to anyway) :-

1/1-2 2/1-2 3/1-48 4/1-48 7/1-48

You are trying to span a session?

set span both inpkts

There are some other parameters you may need to set in the command for it to take, but that should work:

This link has all the span parameters assuming that is what you are talking about. Since you dont have but one VLAN, I assume you weren't talking about spanning-tree...

Thanks guys, I managed to sort the spanning out today.

I spanned the WAN port, as its for surf control.

Its not been tested yet, but sh span returns the right results.

Out of interest, is it ok to span a trunk port? In the sh config all the port I spanned was listed as trunk active or enabled.

Not bad for a CCNA 2.5'er

You can span a trunk port, but i would be very careful depending on which vlans and what kind of SUP you have. If you are just spanning an access vlan with a few clients, no problem. But if you are spanning every vlan and you have some major traffic, you could easily bring the router to its knees. Stay away from backbone trunks or routing vlans, and try to be as specific as possible with spans to avoid trouble.
