6500 IOS Upgrade

Greetings, With the below information, is it possible to tell if both sup720s can simply have their IOSs upgraded and brought online? What concerns me is the difference in the HW/FW revs. I was unable to find anything useful about this on Cisco's site and the hardware is out of warranty....go figure. :)

Thank you

CatOS on the Supervisor Engine and Cisco IOS Software on the MSFC (Hybrid): a CatOS image can be used as the system software to run the Supervisor Engine on Catalyst 6500/6000 switches. If the optional MSFC is installed, a separate Cisco IOS Software image is used to run the MSFC.

----------------------------------------

Cisco IOS Software on both the Supervisor Engine and MSFC (Native): a single Cisco IOS Software image can be used as the system software to run both the Supervisor Engine and MSFC on Catalyst 6500/6000 switches.

----------------------------------------

If you are running a Native mode the image that the switch is currently running if it will fit in the bootflash will be in the SP's bootflash, this is what you upgrade.

The only time you will upgrade what ever is in the RP's bootflash is when you are running Hybrid mode.

So, just to be sure - I should be able to put a new IOS on both sup720s and boot from that and everything should be good to go? Thank you for the response.

What you should be more concerned about is the fact that one is running a MSFC and the other is running a PFC.

It is very likely that you will not be able to find "the same" version for both devices.

That's the reason why it's in the "Active - Cold" state instead of "Active - Standby". I believe it's possible to mix-and-match some revisions of Sup cards, but you can't really tell how they will behave when one card fails. I think the "Cold" card should be configured individually, and will pick the control when another Sup unit dies completely.

Good luck,

Mike

All, thank you for the feedback on this issue. We almost got to test it out last night, but it got delayed. Thanks again for the assistance though.
