How are you blocking the others, and why doesn't that technique work for gmail? They're all just web sites as far as the router is concerned.
try blocking the ssl port (tcp 443)
You could possibly use QoS configurations to drop packets with mail.google in the URL.
Or you could apply an access list to deny traffic to mail.google.com [216.239.59.99]
This has an example of how to configure QoS to stop the Code Red worm... You can apply the techniques for class-based marking with URL recognition.
