1720 IOS Version help

Hi all!

I am trying to find a version of IOS which supports DMVPN, CA (crypto pki server foo) and the VIC-1ENET cards on the 1720.

Feature Navigator is not of great help for us since we do not know the keywords to look for....

Thanks for any help, Christian

What flash and DRAM do you have on that 1720? I doubt you will be able to run the IOS you need on that platform.

This 1720 has 48MB RAM and 16MB Flash. Right now we are running 12.3.19 which support the vic-1enet as well as DMVPN, but lacks support for CA. CA should be introduced in 12.3T, but this does not seem to be available with IPSEC....

I see your point. I guess the IOS architechturally discourages piling all of those roles onto one box in 12.3. If I had my lab set up I would grind all this out but am unable to right now. Good luck.

Hi Christian,

Whenever you install a new card, module or Cisco IOS Software image, verify that the router has enough memory and that the hardware and software are compatible with the features you are using.

To check for hardware and software compatibility and memory requirements, perform these 3 steps:

Step 1: Choose the software for your network device by referring to:

Cisco Software Advisor

Then perform these 2 steps:

Step A: Verify whether the modules and cards installed on the router are supported by the desired Cisco IOS Software version.

Step B: Determine the Cisco IOS Software image that you need and choose the types of features that you will implement by referring to the:

Compare the features in different software releases

section of Software Advisor.

Step 2: Check the minimum amount of memory ( RAM and Flash ) required by the Cisco IOS Software and download the Cisco IOS Software image by referring to:

Determine the amount of memory ( RAM and Flash ) installed on your router by referring to the:

section of How to Choose a Cisco IOS Software Release:

Choose from one of these 2 options:

Option A: If you want to keep the same features as the version currently running on your router, but do not know which feature set you are using, issue the:

command on your router and paste the output into the:

tool. If you plan to use recent software features, check for feature support.

Option B: If you need to upgrade the Cisco IOS Software image to a new version or feature set, refer to How to Choose a Cisco IOS Software Release:

Step 3: If you determine that a software upgrade is required, refer to the document that applies to your platform:

You just may be SOL. The 1720 was quickly replaced with the 1721 and consequently slowly lost support for newer features. I ran into this with the 1750 and 1751 in a fair sized VoIP implementation.
