I seem to remember that Verizon had newsgroups dedicated to both DSL and their wireless service. I see some groups prefaced with "0." but they are inaccessible. Anyone know what happened to these groups?

They should be available to anyone who is using a Verizon account and accessing the groups using the news.verizon.net newsserver. Re download the groups if you have to, and then do a seach on groups beginning with 0.
