From the best of my knowledge...
Quadrature Amplitude Modulation -- Allows more data to be stored within each cycle by breaking up each cycle period into sub-periods representing a bit of information whose value depends upon the amplitude of the wave.
Carrierless Amplitude Phase Modulation -- Precedes QAM and can't fit the same quantity of data thus it being superceded by QAM.
