DD-WRT third party firmware

I have order a Buffalo WHR-G54S router and should be here in three days. I intend to install the DD-WRT third party firmware, however everything that I read is in reference to Linksys WRT54G router, is this the version I need and then does the Buffalo then look as a Linksys Router.

Is this what I need:

" dd-wrt.v23__generic.bin

Generic version for flashing via web interface on all supported devices (including Linksys WRT54G/GL/GS) and for flashing Siemens_SE505 with boot tftp on 192.168.2.1 "

Or is this what I should be looking at instead:

" dd-wrt.v23__wrt54g.bin

tftp versions for WRT54G. You CAN use this to flash via web interface but do so only AFTER you have done so using the mini version. These versions were just made specifically for TFTPing to those routers. (v5/v6 note: Since the WRT54G/GS v5-v6 uses a modified WAP54Gv3 once made 'linux ready', it will not accept these standard WRT54G/GS firmwares. You must use the 'generic' build for TFTPing to these units)."

On real reference to the Buffalo, the Linksys says that you have to install the mini first, is this the case with the Buffalo as well?

Thank you in advance for you time in this matter.

Urm.. Generally speaking you cannot install firmware designed for one brand/model of routers onto a different brand/model. You'll end up ruining your Buffalo. (Assuming it even accepted the new firmware upload)

To use the DD-WRT firmware you need a linksys router.

Well, I have no way to tell what you've been reading.

List of supported hardware is at the bottom:

If you're looking for Buffalo specific information, see:

I suggest you use the TFTP method. Read it CAREFULLY as there is quite a bit of odd detail that needs to be considered. One mistake is to power on the Buffalo and immediately start the TFTP client upload. That usually fails. Wait about 2-3 seconds after applying power and then hit enter. Also, don't fumble with the router and accidentally hit the button on the top. I'm not sure why, but I temporarily "bricked" a Buffalo router by accidentally hitting the button during a firmware upload.

Maybe. All the various versions have a similar filename structure. Current version of the week is at:

No you do NOT need to install the mini version. That's only for specific versions of the Linksys firmware that had a bug which did not allow firmware images larger than 3MBytes.

This is the correct bin:

I had trouble flashing, until I found a way to determine the right time to power up the router and hit enter. Set up the flash with TFTP, but don't hit enter. Power-up the router, and when the port LEDs go out, hit enter.

I am running two at present:

Thanks for the info this is the file that I downloaded so I did get the correct one. Hopefully the router will be delivered tomorrow and I can get started.

Got route last night got it up on Buffalo software, then to bed. This morning flashed to tftp -i 192.168.11.1 PUT dd-wrt.v23_generic.bin, had to wait about 4 or 5 seconds on this end after power up before hitting the enter key on the TFTP command in order not to get time outs, third time is the charm.

Thank you for your input, now off to explore the new OS of the router.
