I need a temporary firewall until I make up my mind as to which bought-and-paid-for thingy I'll get .
Is the freebie Zone Alarm OK?
Does it control what comes in and goes out?
Their page doesn't say much of anything about it.
I'm using XP Pro. Any Zone Alarm problems there?

IMO the free ZA is fine. Yes it controls in and out connections.
You neither need a need free tool nor a commercial one.
Like all personal firewalls it is crap.
No personal Firewall can do that.
