Recently, I was using the computer and surfing on the Web. Then, all the suddenWindows XPProfessional SP2 (all updates) said network cable was unplugged. I checked theCAT5ethernet/network cable cable, and it was fine. I tried another cable, and theonboard networkdidn't detect it either. I checked both cables on my old Apple PowerBook G4, andthey had noproblems.I even tried uninstalling, reinstalling, and upgrading the VIA VT823x PCI FastEthernet Adapter(from Windows Update). Also, reinstalled VIA 4in1 Hyperion driver. None of themhelped orchanged anything that I noticed.Does this sound like the onboard network died? :( I am currently using wirelessUSB networkwhich isn't very stable and slow. Some things to check. First, is whatever goes on the _other_ end of thecable OK? Second, inspect the connector on the machine with a good lightand a magnifier and make sure that nothing has gotten lodged in it or bent. Third, look inside the machine with that same magnifier and good light andmake sure nothing metal has fallen on the circuit traces--check the entireboard, not just near the network connector. Also blow it out with cannedair and turn the machine so that the motherboard is facing down and slapthe back a few times and see if anything dislodges. While you've got themachine open, plug a cable into the network port and make sure that thereis continuity from the traces on the motherboard to the contacts at theother end of the cable--I've seen the wires in the jack get bent justenough that they don't line up with the grooves in the plug and so don'tmake contact with the cable, or there might be a bad solder joint. We don't remember since it was done like about five years ago. My friend thinks it was "-B". Is there a way to check? Any photographs to show so I can check? I hope they are distinguishable.

Weird, the last two overnights (10 hours), no problems. This is before the first disconnection and having to power off the machine completely to reset the network. I turn the machines off when I am at work (14 hours or so).

Any photographs of this so I can compare? I am pretty sure the cables are fine other computer and network cards do not have problems. Only this specific motherboard's onboard network has this problem.

This is an intermittant problem. Very typical of split pairs. Also typical of solid-conductor patchcords.
