Most network block it.

One application is to trouble shoot particular paths thru a network by specifying how for example ping packets are to be routed.

Bhaskar,

Regular everyday routing happens based on destination address. In TCP/IP communications one has a source and a destination. How the packet is routed is usually based on your destination Address. With source routing you have the ability to route on "source" address, oppsoed to your usual destination address.

For example, lets say you have a users in one subnet all a part of

10.2.1.0/24 You would like 10.2.1.0-50 to go through one interface and the rest of the subnet ( 10.2.1.51-255) to go through another, with source routing you have the ability to do this.

Hope this helps.
