Problem with new Catalyst Express 500 switch

I just got a new Catalyst Express 500 and I cannot give it the IP address that I want to give it. My local IP addressing scheme is

10.0.0.0 and it says that I can't give it an address on the 10.0.0.0 subnet. Why is it preventing me and how do I get around it?

Speculation:

Perhaps it already has an IP address assigned to the interface in the default configuration, and you need to remove that IP address before you can put in the one you want.

If not... a log of the attempt showing the exact error message might help our diagnosis.
