PBR

When using a set clause to specify the next hop router address of the outgoing packet, is it possible to test to see if the upstream interface on that next hop router is up?

Thank you. I was not aware of this feature.

Is there a way to test availability of the upstream interface of the next hop router if it's a Netopia (Motorola) or other router that does not participate in CDP?

Yes, ping. It should be detailed in the link. You can have a route based on a successful ping as well as some other options I believe. If that fails, you can configure the alternate option.

Object Tracking

Object tracking is an independent process that monitors objects such as the following:

=95State of the line protocol of an interface

=95Existence of an entry in the routing table

=95Results of a Service Assurance Agent (SAA) operation, such as a ping

Clients such as Hot Standby Router Protocol (HSRP), Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol (VRRP), Gateway Load Balancing Protocol (GLBP), and (with this feature) PBR can register their interest in specific, tracked objects and then take action when the state of the objects changes.

Just one thing you need to be careful about. There are IOS/HW dependencies on what gets hardware switched. So not all PBR tracking is done in hardware in all platforms. Make sure you research that if you expect a lot of volume.
