hi Is ospf authentication interface specific or does it have to be enabled throughout the ospf area.

It must be enabled for an entire area. The passwords do not have to be the same for throughout the area; it can be interface specific (between neighbors).

I did some looking up and came across this doc on Cisco website that supports per interface authentication on release 12 0(8) and above.

1 or Type 2 on all interfaces in the area using the area xx authentication under the router ospf process or it can be enabled on a per interface basis(ip ospf authentication) under the interface and it can be used if "a different authentication method or no authentication method is configured under the area to which the interface belongs". This feature makes migrating to ospf authentication much more simpler as there is a potential for a total area outage if the command is enabled globally under the area as opposed to implementing it in the area on a per interface basis with only its peer being down during the reconfiguring.
