Next hop reachability on cisco catalyst switch

I have cisco catalyst 4503 switch with one of the vlan interfaces being 10.130.181.4/28 It's next hop device is 10.130.181.1/28



Next hop device is connected to cisco catalyst with a L2 switch.



If the interface 10.130.181.1 goes down, how does cisco detects the failure to reach the next hop and stops forwarding the traffic ?



Is there a way in the catalyst switch to enable detecting this failure and hence stopping the traffic forwarding ?

this is one of the traditional jobs of a routing protocol.

if you are using statics then not sure, but you can lin

use a routing protocol - eg OSPF.

when the path breaks, OSPF hellos stop getting thru the link, after timeout the adjacency is torn down, and any routes using that path change or get withdrawn.

there are a number of mechanism to address this issue:

  1. BFD

  1. Relialbe static routing with object tracking

  2. a dynmaicrouting protocol
