Cisco 2950 LRE fails during IOS upgrade

Apr 09, 2007 4 Replies

Here is a little bit about my environment, I just received 10 used

2950 LRE's with a 12.1.14 IOS loaded on them. I am in the process of upgrading them all to 12.1.22-EA4 using TFTP and the basic "copy tftp flash" command. The problem is that 7 out of 10 of them fail at about
70% completion. I receive an error message stating that "error accessing TFTP server at IP x.x.x.x."

Now again, some of these are able to be upgraded without a problem. I was originally using TFTP dekstop, but then switched the the Solarwinds TFTP app, but the upgrade fails at approx the same place each time. I have even gone back on to the Cisco web site and downloaded the IOS image again to make sure that it was not corrupt, but the same failure happens.

Thanks in advance, and let me know if there is anything else that you need.

Matt

Have you checked the flash sizes on the failing swiches? are all the switches identical? Maybe the flash is not enough. Also try to copy one of them using Xmodem.

Thats not the typical way you upgrade 2950s unless you are omitting the renaming step.

They typically do not have much flash in them at all, and the typical upgrade process is to rename existing image to new image name, copy tftp flash (with or without /archive option), and update bootpath. This is outlined in the release notes of any 2924/2950 switch since they've been out.

I suspect you are trying to just copy up the new image, and hitting flash too full errors and its bombing out there.

I checked the available space on flash, and there is enough space to copy the new image over. All switches are the exact same make and model, with the same amount of flash. As i was researching it today, i noticed a posting about using xmodem, so i was going to try that and see what happens.

thanks matt

Doug, after looking at it again, you are absolutely correct. What i did was issue the erase flash: command (without rebooting the switch) then copy the new image over and it worked like a charm.

Thanks again! Matt
