64MB DRAM upgrade for 831/836?

My 836 has 32MB base memory and a 16MB card. Can I replace this card by a

32MB model? The new 836 has 64MB of base memory and a maximum of 80MB (also the newer IOS versions need 64MB of DRAM)

Regards, Carsten

You can try a 32MB module from a 1700 series router. Perhaps it works. I was able to upgrade SOHO9x routers to 48MB with a MEM830-16D module. Even if they are not upgradeable ;-)

Hard to believe, that the developers don't respect the memory limits of a given target platform. Now that less that 0.1 percent of all C83x/SOHO9x router in the field are the new 64MB models, you can now order for a few weeks...

Thank you for your information! Unfortunately the same problem: max. memory only 48MB but the newewst IOS versions need 64MB... :-(

The old versions will not support latest images. You'll need physically new unit, with P/N ending with -64MB to run latest releases. It's hardware thing, old units simply can't be upgraded.

Cisco posted an bulletin on CCO about that upgrade:

Perfect! :-( Last month I bought a new service contract for software updates, which I can't use...

There is nothing mentioned about the older Routers with 32MB onboard. I don't know a physical reason, why the C83x routers won't accept a 32MB module instead of the 16MB module.

There are also new 12.3(11)T and 12.3(8)T rebuilds ;-)

It does actually talk about the old models under the "New Product Part Numbers" : "The old part numbers cannot be upgraded for additional DRAM and will be phased out."

Doesn't look good..
