If you only make an occasional cable you can tone one pair while you are terminating the far end. Then just make sure the pair with the tone on it is punched as the same pair on both ends.

Hi Manny, There is no bullet proof solution I know of. They also use stripes on the conductors, but the stripes are colored as well, so it would not really resolve the issue. However, I do have a suggestion for you: try brighter work light or better yet try one of those fluorescent work lights as oppose to regular incandescent bulb ones. They put out a different light spectrum (more on the blue side of it), and it may help you to distinguish the colors.
I am partially colorblind myself (brown and red). I went out and bought a full spectrum fluorescent bulb and a portable lamp. As long as I can find power, I can figure out the color codes.

Yeah, Gruber Industries in Arizona. They'll gladly make your custom cables, and have them to you in a short time.
How are these folks to work with? I get E-mails and calls from them all the time and I've thought about ordering patch cables, racks etc but don't know anyone with personal experience with them.
I don't deal with the P.O. and money aspect, my boss handles that. Just don't give 'em your fax number, they'll fax you all the time with 'special offers'. We got one from them the other day for a special offer on some surplus umpteen kVA UPSes that they got. The shipping and installation alone on those would be so much that they would eat up most of the cost, so savings would be minimal.
Oops, I forgot, that 'special offer' was by email. Well, with email, you've got a chance of getting off their list if you don't want their junk emails.
Right now, we're getting our patch cables from Anixter, but I suspect that they also use Gruber, among others. All Anixter does is drop ship just like Radio Snack and other big comglomerates.
Like 8% of males, I'm color blind to a degree. Using a fluoresent light seems to instead of a more yellow incandescent seems to work best for me. Been doing telco stuff for 30 years and just discovered how color blind I really am at last eye exam.
When I started working for a telco, over 30 years ago, I had to take a colour blindness test, before I was hired. I passed. (and I didn't even study for it) ;-)
