How to set up superstack 3 for cable modem internet access

Hoping I might be able to get a little information or direction here.

We have 3COM Superstack II 3300 switches and router. I inherited this network and know enough to keep things going. That said.

Currently we have a cable modem access thru a pc running proxy software. An NT server runs DHCP. The software howerver has limitations. We can ftp from pc using the proxy, along with some other issues. I am wondering if I should use the cable modem directly into the 3Com SuaperStack 3300 switch or set up a Linux box to handle the connection. If I use the switch, is there any type of setup? Would using a linux box with 2 nic's give me better firewall protection. At some point in time I want to be able to use the connection to have others come in using VPN. Any direction or thoughts would be greatly appreciated!
