How to connect to a nearby open access point.

Occasionally, such as when I'm in a parking lot, my laptop will indicate that I'm in range of an open network (open meaning non-secure). If I wanted to access this network and use it to connect to internet, what would be the procedure? Since m adapter card is set fopr wep security, would I have to set for open?

Any help appreciated.

PS: I'm not a hacker; just looking to avoid T-Mobile costs I'm charged at Starbucks.
