D-Link DWL-G710 no login?

I inherited a DWL-G710 range extender and after much farting around appear to have it working at 11mbps with my SMC Barricade G router. At least, I can access its configuration webserver via the router without a wired connection to it. Surprising thing is that there is no security on the webserver when accessing it this way. There was when I went through its wired port. That seems to be pretty insecure if it was used on much more than a family LAN - anybody with LAN access could discover it.

Anyone else have the same behavior? It's running Firmware Version v1.04, Mon, 19 Dec 2005 after a problem-free upgrade from 1.03.

Hmmm, there is a login some of the time. It appears that something can trigger its security but I don't know what. In order of probability:

  1. Power interruption to the DWL-G710 causng a restart.
  2. Disabling/enabling wireless on the SMC router
  3. Something else Time does not appear to be a factor.
