abandoned?

"Another feature is the ability to play a pre recorded message to handle abandoned calls." - ad for predictive dialer system

What is an "abandoned call" and why would it have to be "handled?" - RM

The TSR (FTC & FCC Telemarketing Sales Rule) defines this. IIRC, an abandoned call occurs when a predictive dialer dials, and the called party picks up, but there is no human available on the calling side within two seconds. In this case, the caller has to play an informatory message about who called (it can't be a sales pitch). Also, no more than 2% of calls can be abandoned, and a call has to ring for a given time (or number of rings).

A quote from digisoft.com site: "An abandoned call occurs when a live person picks up the phone, but there are no available agents to take the call. When the person hangs up the phone before the dialer switches the call to an agent, the call is "abandoned". A high quality dialer enables an administrator to adjust the calling rate to minimize abandoned calls."

So, in your case the system will get you either in manual mode (if an agent is available) or by just playing a pre-recorded message for your listening pleasure.
