I've got some old 56k DSU/CSUs out in my garage, I can't remember the brand name offhand, but it might be datatell. Some of the stuff we bought was rebranded with the mainframe maker's stick-on logo. I'm not sure what you mean by 56kdds, we called them ADN circuits. IIRC, when I looked at the circuit boards of these, they didn't have any smarts, i.e. a microcontroller on the board. However, they may use a technology known as a state machine, which is difficult to understand and trace down without detailed schematics.
