I normally use the three-piece crimp-ons, but I've also used twist-ons in a pinch, and seen them in a lot of installations. I've had a lot more problems with the two-piece crimps, mostly because the shield crimps always seem to be significantly larger than the cable I use, and I just can't get a tight fit on them.

In my experience, the only time I've ever seen problems with twist-ons is when they're installed poorly - insulation not stripped back enough, or stripped back too much so the threads don't bite into it, etc. Of course, any connector type will give you problems if you do a half-assed job of it.

My only real problem with twist-ons is the pain in the wrists after doing any more than a half-dozen or so of them.

BTW, for those connections exposed to the elements, I find it handy to carry a tube of dielectric grease, the kind sold in automotive stores for coating battery posts and wiring harness connections under the hood. Goop some of that in there, then if possible, wrap it up tight in PVC tape (the stretchier, the better, to you can get a good tight form-fit).

Not much you can do about the "tire iron" calls short of installing Extreme CCTV domes...

While your at that automotive store, see if they have any spark plug rubber boots. Some that are used on foriegn cars are just big enough to slip over the coax and the F connector and with some of that silicon grease inside of it, it'll protect your out door connections better than tape. You can also get the rubber boots from various connector Mfg's.

I get 2 piece crimp ons made by Steren from DBL for most applications. Never have a problem if I install them. Doesn't matter what kind if conenctor it is if somebody else installs them.

For some special jobs I use Snap-N Seal connectors. I keep a hundred or so of both common zies on hand and always repair a trouble conenction witht hem because they also offer some strain relief.

I have tried twist ons in the past and they are still in service and still working, but they are definitely not in my opinion the easiest to install properly.

Ages ago I only used 3 piece crimp ons, but due to the difficulty of getting them from most distributors in the proper sizes and the extra care and precisions need to trim the cable and install them I now only use the 3 piece for the rare RG-58 data repair or stranded center conduct flex cables.

After using all four I can install the 2 piece crimp ons the fastest with the least (nearly none) troubles over a long period. They are also the most forgiving when handed to other techs.

I'm not sure what problem you are describing here. I get the best average success rate paired with speed with 2 piece BNCs. I use the proper size hex die and get a great connection every time. It looks very proffessional and works very well for me.

P.S. 3 piece are fine, but a lot of distributors just don't have them or they don't have sales people intelligent enough to find them.

As I said, they're in common use. They may not be the best choice but for indoor applications, especially where the connector isn't expected to be handled frequently, they are acceptable. Once I tried compression fittings I never used anything else though.

I never liked crimp coax connectors. I've tried them with various cable types and thicknesses. They're a royal PITO.

Also, if the outer cable jacket is too thin (Eastern Wire & Cable, for example) the connector can't get a decent hold. I've seen twist-on cases where a professional installer wrapped the end of thin coax in electrical tape and then used twist-on connectors. After a year or two the physical connection degraded. Usually the electrical connection was OK until anyone touched it and the connection was lost.

That's what cordless screwdrivers are for. You grip the BNC connector in the chuck, hold the prepared cable with one hand and... :^)

One of the things I like best about modern dome cameras is the connections are all internal.

I've tried heat-shrink tubing as well, but I find once I get one large enough to fit over the connector, it won't shrink enough to actually seal the shield crimp, even using 3:1 tubing.

I've only ever had "fit" problems like that using FT6, but in those cases, I just leave more of the shield braid and fold it back over the sheath, so the threads bite them in between it and the insulation.

That's almost MORE work. Actually, you could chuck a butt-end connector in there, though, and use that as a "jig" to spin the connector...

I've never even heard of Muxlab. That's one of the challenges in this industry. There are so many products out there that it's impossible to know them all. Were struggling to trim our approved products list while trying to appease our customers who all seem to have their favorites.

I was involved in one government project using VIP encoders and a VIDOS about 6 months ago. We've got another installation going on right now with a DIBOS and a mix of analog cameras and IP cameras. We looked at a lot of IP systems and Bosch seemed like a better system than Pelco Endura, SmartSight, Intellex IP, etc. Some of it is the great support we get from Bosch and their MR's.

We might be the only ones here that like DiBos and Vidos. Did you use Vidos
