NetScreen-5 (NS-005_001) - Software Version?

The NetScreen 5 (not XP, XT, or GT) can only run 2.6.

And you certainly can't be serious about wanting 'free' ScreenOS. What do you think software mfr's have maintenance costs for? It's so they can continue to develop software -and- (this is an important part) stay in business.

It's called due diligence, look into it next time.

The latest (last) ScreenOS release for Netscreen 5 is 2.6.1r13, so you are already close.

There were two security advisories fixed between your current release and the latest:

NetScreen Security Alert 51897 (Predictable TCP initial sequence numbers) NetScreen Advisory 57983 (Potential DHCP information leak)

You may be entitled to a free upgrade due to the security advisories. I suggest you contact Juniper by phone, explain your situation, and reference the above advisories.

I Contacted Netscreen. I explained my situation and they would not help me.

At one time Netscreen provided free security patches, but I guess the policy has changed since Juniper purchased them.

too bad netcreen is a great firewall but the juniper apently dont want custimors to comback judging from their lacking support for peouple that have paid big cach for their expensive netscreen firewalls ... i guess we have to get another product next time.. somthing like watchguard.. or another product from were the producent wants to support custimors included in the price for life after their product has left the counter in the stores.. juniper has shown a gready and cairless attitude towards ther custimors fore a long time now.. i just hope they will wize up soon..

after all a firewall without support is not safe.. and not worth the money

Sorry but a 5XP is not an expensive firewall. What you're saying is you want Juniper to take a $500 appliance, and support it with software upgrades for the rest of its life? Thats complete idiocy and financially unsustainable. You will find that any firewall manufacturer at this level has the same system - major OS upgrades will cost $$$ or require up to date support contracts. The support contracts for the 5series of firewall are also fairly inexpensive.
