A lot of people probably don't even know what RFC means :-)
Their newsreader/mailclient doesn't generate an error or warning message (developers should implement this IMHO). So I'm guessing they don't understand why someone tells them they're doing something wrong. Perhaps they're just being paranoid, since anyone can say anything on usenet.
