Why is it the words 'sow's' and 'ears' spring to mind?

tell me. English is my second language.
There are so many stories about what firewall A does and B does not, about the merit of FW A above B, etc, the teminology of about every commercial FW is proprietary: "blocked", "stealth", you name it. A lot of it is mumbo.. It's a jungle, in short.
McAfee is bloated these days (20 or 30 Mb I see in taskmanager !) Zonealarm gives troubles with some programs etc etc.etc. A lot of the functionality hidden behind icons and pretty pictures and terminology. I can handle IPtables in Linux, but dont want to have an extra machine powered on 24/7/52.
Something lean and mean in Windows woould be nice, with a minimum of trust aspects and a maximum of knowing-whats-going-on.
Sorry - we have a saying that 'You can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear'!
I would never have guessed that English is your second language.
