I am planning to update two watchguard sohos configured for VPN remotely and I want to make sure they keep their settings after the update. I went to the watchguard website but it wasn't clear if I would have to reconfigure the device after updating it.

Some firmware updates reset it, some don't. You only real way of knowing is to contact WatchGuard. Unless you have someone onsite, don't do it remotely - at least I wouldn't.
I have a Watchguard SOHO6 and have updated the firmware and it retains all of your previous settings after the Watchguard reboots.
Hi Gary. I updated both firewalls and they did not lose any settings at all. It saved me a trip to two different offices.
