Commercial firewalls

If your new computer is loaded with a "free" commercial package (anti-virus, firewall, etc.), that turns out to be updated for only 3 months but you don't want to fork out the annual update fee for the AV part, is it safe to replace the AV module with a free package (like AVG) but continue to use the firewall? In other words, how often does a commercial firewall need updating?

Start by letting us know what Commercial Firewall you are talking about.

The question applies to any of the AV/firewall packages that are commonly pre-loaded with PCs. I guess Norton or McAfee are the most popular ones.
