Yes, on large networks it prevents from excess traffic on trunk links. It prevents traffic originating from a particular VLAN from being sent to switches on which that VLAN is not active (i.e., switches that do not have ports connectedandconfigured for that VLAN).

If you have a large network where parts are isolated/segmented you can do so.
Remember that all switched need to support pruning!
