If I have an interface , and a number sub interfaces.. how should my assignment of ip addresses to these sub interfaces be? should they be on the same subnet as that of the main interface?

If I have an interface , and a number sub interfaces.. how should my assignment of ip addresses to these sub interfaces be? should they be on the same subnet as that of the main interface?
Each subinterface IS an interface, its just virtual instead of physical. Therefore, each subinterface must be in its own subnet. Typically the only thing you configure on the physical interface might be some encapsulation specs if I remember.
