How verify PC connected properly to the service port?

May 09, 2005 3 Replies

I have connected the service port cable from my cisco 831 router to a com port of a w2k PC. What command can I run on the PC to establish a service port connection to the router?

I started telnet but do not know what to connect to. tried "open com1" and that did not work.

thanks,

Hi Steve,

On a Windows box you have a program called Hyperterminal. START>PROGRAMS>ACCESSORIES>COMMUNICATIONS.

Connect the console cable to your serial port and to the console port of your router. Run Hyperterminal and change bits per second be set to 9600.

Hit return once finished and you should have access to the console.

Hope this helps,

Rob

Unless, that is, you need access to the prom, and your version of hyperterm is one of the ones that won't generate a true BREAK signal...

that did it Rob, thanks!
