Cisco 877 won't sync with Versatel DSLAM (Netherlands)

Hello,

One of our customers in The Netherlands has an ADSL line over POTS from Versatel (provider is IntroWeb). Because the Cisco 877 we sold to the customer wasn't available to us yet, we temporarily installed a Cisco SOHO97. This worked perfectly. A few days later we went on site again with the Cisco 877, copied the config from the Cisco SOHO97 into the Cisco 877. But... no linesync. A 'debug atm events' shows the following:

000218: Nov 7 16:12:50.738 GMT+1: sleep 5 seconds 000219: Nov 7 16:12:55.738 GMT+1: DSL: Send ADSL_OPEN command. 000220: Nov 7 16:12:55.738 GMT+1: DSL(ATM0): Using subfunction 0x0 000221: Nov 7 16:12:55.738 GMT+1: LOCAL:Max noise margin for power cutoff 31 000222: Nov 7 16:12:55.738 GMT+1: DSL(ATM0): Sent command 0x3 000223: Nov 7 16:12:58.238 GMT+1: DSL(ATM0): 1: Modem state = 0x8 000224: Nov 7 16:13:00.738 GMT+1: DSL(ATM0): 2: Modem state = 0x8 000225: Nov 7 16:13:03.238 GMT+1: DSL(ATM0): 3: Modem state = 0x8 000226: Nov 7 16:13:05.738 GMT+1: DSL(ATM0): 4: Modem state = 0x8 000227: Nov 7 16:13:08.238 GMT+1: DSL(ATM0): 5: Modem state = 0x8 000228: Nov 7 16:13:10.738 GMT+1: DSL(ATM0): 6: Modem state = 0x9 000229: Nov 7 16:13:12.606 GMT+1: DSL: Received response: 0x22 000230: Nov 7 16:13:12.606 GMT+1: DSL: Open failed: The ATU-C and ATU-R are not configured for a common mode of operation -- retrying 000231: Nov 7 16:13:12.610 GMT+1: sleep 5 seconds

We know for sure the Cisco 877 is NOT defective, because it works perfectly on KPN and BBned DSL lines. We also tried several IOS versions (from 12.3.8 to 12.4.4), no solution.

Below is the output from the Cisco SOHO97, which IS working on the DSL line from Versatel:

The odd thing is the empty 'Vendor ID' string under ATU-C(US). Configuration of the ATM-interface in the Cisco SOHO97 and Cisco 877 is identical:

interface ATM0 no ip address ip route-cache policy ip route-cache flow no atm auto-configuration no atm ilmi-keepalive no atm address-registration no atm ilmi-enable pvc 0/32 encapsulation aal5mux ppp dialer dialer pool-member 10 ! dsl operating-mode auto

We also tried every possible option for the 'dsl operating-mode' command, no effect.

Anyone seen this before, or know a solution?

Well this doesn't look good.

This seems to be G.lite. I don't think the 877 will go G.Lite. It isn't mentioned in the 870 router datasheet at

What choices were there? G.Lite was configured with 'dsl operating-mode splitterless' on a random 837 router I looked at.

We have had this problem with 877W routers connecting to Fujitsu DSLAMs in the UK. Various forums have suggested that changes to dsl operating-mode will fix the problem but we have found the only solution to be a pre-release IOS upgrade which has fixed the problem. We have had 800 of these routers just manufactured and shipped all with the older IOS. After upgrading the routers we have installed over 150 with no problems.

The problem has been dicussed on the Cisco web site but I cannot rememeber exactly where.

Hope this helps Paul Elliott

Thank you for your reaction. Could you please tell me exactly which IOS version you are using now on the 877W's (including feature set) ?
