1751-V **Software emulation error*

Hello, this has been my worst night. I have a Cisco 1751-V with c1700-sy7v-mz.122-12 image which I thought it was ok. After connecting to the console the router decompresses the image and then reboots stating that a problem ocurred.

I have it in diagnostic mode so when I boot it I see:

Hello pabloquintana,

[ snip ]

The fact that you are getting an error when you try to reload the IOS should be your clue. What error do you get?

Bottom line, it seems to me like a corrupt IOS image.

Thanks for your answer. I believe the IOS is corrupted too. That is why I tried to reinstall another image with no success. After the image has been copied through tftp or xmodem the image will try to boot and then the same error appears:

Any other ideas?

Hello pabloquintana,

Not sure. I will say that I can't find your software release on CCO -- when I select 12.2 and the 1751-V, the only choices I get are either ED (12.2.15T17,

12.2.15T16, 12.2.13T16, and 12.2.10-TPC10a) or deferred (a bunch of 12.2.15 and 12.2.13 releases).

No idea if that has anything to do with it but you might try a different code release.

Did you recently upgrade something on the box (IOS image? rommon?) or is it that this particular image and rommon combination worked fine on the box until recently?

Some things for you to try -

  1. Power cycle the box and try booting the image again just in case this is some kind of persistent rommon bug that needs a cold reset to fix itself.

  1. Set the config register to ignore config and see if it boots up fine then. That might give you a clue that it has something to do with some config command. Note that the error seems to happen after the image is loaded and init is happening (possibly application of the startup config).

The router worked fine with this configuration. I didn't update any software recently. The router was sitting in my office for several months until now.

What would be the config register that will ignore the config?

Try setting the configuration register to 0x2142 to have it ignore the startup config on boot. The rommon command to cause that should be someting like

rommon 5 > confreg 0x2142

This setting will just add the ignore start-up config bit to the default value of the config register and so breaks will still be disabled, and you will auto-boot.

Look at

for details on the bits in the config register.
