does anyone know if there is an enterprise version IOS for the 3500XL? I want to setup a lab with routing and just happened to have one of these switches.

Yes, there are enterprise version IOS images for the c3550. The c3550-i9q3l2-mz image for instance should let you do routing.

Is the 3500 and the 3550 the same? i am using the 3500xl with power over ethernet...
Not the same. No routing suport in 3500XL. Newest software is 12.0(5)WC14.
