We are using a Linksys WAP54G as a WAP.
To enter the web interface, there doesn't seem to be a way to specify a username - it is blank - although you can set the password.
I'm sure it's very simple, but does anyone know how to set a username?!

You probably can't - on several simple routers the admin username is hardcoded.
