Cannot contact wired computer from wireless network

A cheap switch costs around $50 at most.

You definitely should NOT have development machines directly connecting to the internet. You absolutely need a firewall between you and the net.

I hope this doesn't sound patronising, but before you go on, you need to learn more about how to protect yourself.

You should really get a router or a FW appliance that handles multiple IP (s) from the ISP and route traffic to the appropriate LAN side IP/machine. You can also bring the wireless router or a WAP device into the protected LAN zone as well and you shouldn't have any problems. I understand you want to do your own thing with your set-up, but it may not be a viable solution for you.

I thought he had a hub and a wireless modem. While i'd expect the modem to have at least one wired ethernet port too, it may not. Did he mention what sort it was?

Absolutely.
