Could one une a v90/92 voice modem as a PSTN/VoIP phone gateway ?

Any opensource project around ? AFAIK Asterisk can recognize some intel-based voice modem as a pstn i/o resource. But Asterisk is not actually a light solution for soho use. And an only-Intel-based v92 modem is not what one could call an "opened solution". In other words, is there a way for someone owning a basic config (windows pc w/voice modem, xDSL internet access & a phone line) to set up a small pstn/voip gateway without using a specific or specialized hardware ? Does a standardized command set for controlling a v90/92 modem - already - exists ? (a bit like the famous "Hayes ascii strings" in its time) Patrick
