I know what you mean ( on a much smaller scale) Seems nowdays that more and more of my service calls and take over work is comprised of fixing things that the previous companys didn't do.
I'm taking over a small deli in town. The new owners called the previous owners alarm company to come and take over their monitoring .... it took 4 telephone calls to get them to call back. They explained that they couldn't arm the system because there was a
1, 2, 6 and 8 coming up on the keypad. He told them that it was open zones and instructed them over the phone on how to bypass them before arming the system with the previous owners arming code. One of the zones was the front door and one of the other zones was the motion detector in the shop. The operating keypad was mounted behind the counter on the same wall as the control panel and an old inoperative keypad from a previous system was left by the front door. Obvious to anyone that it was dead with no lights or alpha display. The phone line had been disconnected so there was no central station and weeks passed and the alarm company never called them back. Last Sunday they were broken into and their brand new cash register was stolen along with some other small items and they destroyed the front door which had to be replaced. On monday, I'm going to replace the $69.00 board, move the kepad up by the front door and fix the open contacts for $200.00 and get $25.00 a month for about 2 hours worth of work. It's a loss leader but hell, I'll make it up the first few months and be the hero ta boot!I might even get some video work out of it because I'm guessin whoever did the break-in was probably a customer and saw that the old keypad by the door wasn't working. I mentioned that to the new owner which was something that he hadn't thought of. The next day he tried to watch how many people looked at the old keypad and he found that most, glanced at it as they left the store.
