802.1x tweaking

Looking for some sources for 802.1x tweaking with our BS5510 switches. This appears to be working okay, but the time between authentication and when the client gets a DHCP address can take up to 30 seconds. This seems a little long to me. Maybe my expectations are too high, but I envision this whole process to take maybe 1-2 seconds to perform the .1x auth and then another couple more seconds to complete the DHCP request. What I am finding really interesting, is the time varies wildly. We have a very high speed enterprise with no congestion on any of the links that the authentication process would cross. Any ideas? Thx.
